Wilke is best known for sculptural works made of latex, rubber, and other soft, sensuous materials through which she sought to find metaphors for and imagery of the body. This work represents a somewhat unusual and rather early example of the artist’s body-related, gestural imagery, which was influenced by abstract expressionist painting. The biomorphic, floral-like form in this drawing foreshadows vagina symbols in the artist’s later three-dimensional work, while the contrasting black lines disrupting the soft central imagery anticipate the political intensity of her feminist art that followed.
