Stretching the material and formal possibilities of language and text, Morton often investigated games and fantasy narratives to create work marked by simplicity, eccentricity, and decorativeness. She came late to art-making, beginning her studies as a thirty-three-year-old mother of three. After raising her children, she returned to school and earned an MFA degree in 1970. The lyricism and imagination of this irregularly shaped, cut-paper work was inspired, in part, by her children’s games and play—despite the fact that, at the time, the domestic realm was largely regarded as off-limits for so-called serious artists.
