Le Pain Symbiotique
Anicka Yi

Le Pain Symbiotique, 2014

In tactile, often fragrant sculptures, paintings, and installations, Yi explores the multi-sensorial and mutational possibilities of art. She experiments freely with materials, allowing them to morph, expand, and decay, privileging transience and perishability over stasis and permanence. With Le Pain Symbiotique, Yi creates a universe in miniature that encompasses both biological and synthetic elements. In this PVC-contained ecosystem, yeast, mold, and bacteria grow unimpeded, creeping up pedestals that hold objects encased in glycerin and projectors casting a ghostly glow. This environment of microbial flourishing is both science experiment and speculative imagining of a post-human world finding its way to new equilibrium.
