For the ongoing series Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, begun in 2000, Pfeiffer digitally manipulated photographs of basketball players found in the NBA archives, removing all identifying information and traces of the basketball game, including the ball, other players, team logos, and banners. Surrounded by a crowd of spectators, the central figures are isolated and uncannily suspended mid-movement, formally recalling religious icons. In this series, Pfeiffer explores the parallels between sports and spiritual worship, in particular their shared heightened emotional state of mass devotion.
