In her intricate and lurid paintings, Caroompas arranged chaotic mixes of iconography drawn from influences as wide ranging as literature, art history, movies, and pornography, often referencing popular culture or domesticity.
When read together, the unusual combinations of recognizable charac ters and esoteric symbols interweave to become allegorically connected, creating subversive new meanings. By prompting this exercise in free association, Caroompas offered wry feminist critique of preconceived notions of gender and cul ture. It is not by chance that childhood fairy tales, with their idealistic portrayal of romance, are used by the artist here to investigate the mythological baggage that can live on in the adult psyche.
