To create the bark-like texture of this work, Rubins worked many layers of graphite into the surface of torn paper laid out on the floor. She then combined and pinned the graphite-laden “accumulation” directly to the wall, giving it an architectonic presence. While her process is expressive—one imagines the bodily activities of intense rubbing and vigorous tearing—the composition is decidedly formal. By constructing a drawing that traverses a corner, Rubins inches into territory not typically associated with works on paper: sculpture.
