Pioneering photographer Bob Mizer founded the Athletic Model Guild in 1945. This film and photo studio in Echo Park specialized in male physique imagery, which it distributed for mail-order and published in the long-running Physique Pictorial magazine. In myriad satirical prison dramas, sci-fi flix, domesticated bachelor scenarios, and biker romps, Mizer photographed and filmed over 10,000 models—sixty photos a day, seven days a week, for almost fifty years. The Athletic Model Guild was well-known to Andy Warhol, who based his Factory studio in New York on Mizer’s example: a place of experimentation and relentless production, a harbor for weirdos, and a key site of the 1960’s sexual revolution. Included here are two paste-up photo boards showing images available for purchase.
