Whether shouted by protestors, mumbled by politicians, or scrawled as graffiti across the buildings of Downtown Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Washington, DC, and elsewhere, the words “ABOLISH ICE” became an indelible part of the language landscape in 2025—a common expression of dissent against the immigration policies of the Trump administration. Andrea Bowers makes use of the words in her wall-mounted sculpture, a blindingly hot, LED-lit protest sign-cum-storefront neon, in which individual letters are shaped in cardboard from produce boxes. Prescient from today’s vantage, the work was made in 2018.
