MY BARBARIAN
My Barbarian is a Los Angeles–based performance collective founded in 2000 by Malik Gaines, Jade Gordon, and Alexandro Segade. The trio makes site-responsive performances and video installations that use theatrical play to draw allegorical narratives out of historical dilemmas, mythical conflicts, and current political crises. My Barbarian has performed and exhibited widely in both the United States and abroad, including in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum, and LAXART; in New York at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New Museum for Contemporary Art, and the Studio Museum in Harlem; and in Europe at De Appel, Amsterdam, Peres Projects, Berlin, and Galleria Civica, Trento, Italy. My Barbarian was included in the 2005 and 2007 Performa Biennials, the 2006 and 2008 California Biennials, the 2007 Montréal Biennial, and the 2009 Baltic Triennial. In 2008, they received an Art Matters grant to make a new performance and video project at the Townhouse Gallery in Cairo, Egypt. In 2009, the group had solo exhibitions at Steve Turner Contemporary in Los Angeles and Participant Inc. in New York. |
