“To Illustrate and Multiply: An Open Book” was first conceived in 2003, when we discovered a mutual appreciation for artists’ books. We had long been interested in artists’ books within our respective roles as conservator and editor. While we agreed on the thesis of the exhibition, we brought different outlooks to the table which, we feel, strengthened the overall concept.
Since that time, the project has benefited from the contributions of many. First and foremost, it has been immeasurably enriched by the support and participation of the artists. Raymond Pettibon kindly allowed us to borrow the title of a limited edition ’zine for our exhibition title and was exceptionally generous in allowing us to include four ’zines in our Reading Area. Similarly, Adam Janes created a major work, and Euan Macdonald made several new drawings especially for presentation in this exhibition. We are deeply indebted to them. In addition, the following artists generously made donations of their work to the exhibition and collection: Fernando Bryce, Merlin Carpenter, Matthew Chambers, David Horvitz, Allen Ruppersberg, Lawrence Weiner, and Christopher Williams.
We are thrilled and honored to feature work by the following artists: Francis Alÿs, Giovanni Anselmo, Lars Arrhenius, Darren Bader, John Baldessari, Lothar Baumgarten, Iain Baxter, Thomas Bayrle, Larry Bell, Dara Birnbaum, Marcel Broodthaers, Fernando Bryce, Luca Buvoli, John Cage,
