The designer of some of the most innovative automobiles of the last decade, J Mays uses a multidisciplinary approach which draws inspiration from fashion, architecture, and industrial design. Currently vice-president of global design at Ford Motor Company, Mays previously worked for Audi-Volkswagen and BMW, and his successes include the concept for the new Volkswagen Beetle; the Audi AVUS; and the redesigned Ford Thunderbird, among others. A comprehensive overview of his work organized by MOCA Curator of Architecture and Design Brooke Hodge, Retrofuturism: The Car Design of J Mays marks the first museum exhibition devoted to the work of an American car designer. Among its highlights is the world premiere of the Ma, a kit-of-parts car that is 96% recyclable. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.
Retrofuturism: The Car Design of J Mays has been made possible in part by the generous support of Dwell, Mandy and Cliff Einstein, and Gilbert B. Friesen. Significant in-kind support has been provided by Ford Motor Company, Volkswagen of America, Inc., and Panelite LLC.
