DAVID E. JAMES ART TALK
07.15.10 6:30 PM
MOCA Grand Avenue, Ahmanson Auditorium

Widely considered a disaster when it was first released, Dennis Hopper’s epic Western The Last Movie (1971) has come to be regarded by many critics as something of a modernist masterpiece. In conjunction with Dennis Hopper Double Standard, David E. James, who wrote on Hopper's connection to avant-garde cinema in his books Allegories of Cinema: American Film in the Sixties (1989) and The Most Typical Avant-Garde: History and Geography of Minor Cinemas in Los Angeles (2005), will discuss the origins and fate of the film, placing it in the context of ’60s reflexive movies including Andy Warhol’s, Tarzan and Jane Regained . . . Sort Of (1964), in which Hopper appears.
