Watts Towers staff will reinvent Trading Dirt (1983) through conversations and socialization. Staff will trade dirt with the following artists and community members: Simon Rodia (through a symbolic exchange utilizing vintage footage); Mr. and Mrs. Pichardo; Augustine Aguirre; Kenzi Shiokava; Varnette Honeywood; and John Outterbridge. Each person will place the exchanged dirt in his or her garden or designated space. Simultaneously, a second bucket will acquire dirt from each community member and the entire mixture will be brought back to WTAC. Avenue 50 Studio
Meet at Sycamore Grove Park (3 blocks from Ave 50) at 4700 N. Figueroa Street
Avenue 50 Studio will trade dirt with its neighbors, many of whom are recent immigrants from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Puerto Rico. In this reinvention of Trading Dirt (1983), the trading of dirt may also lead to the trading of stories and memories. This event is coordinated with the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles. INFO 323/258-1435
Through spontaneous exchanges of dirt and documentation of these exchanges throughout Los Angeles, students from Claremont Graduate University, School of Art, will reinvent Trading Dirt (1983). A blog will be created with LA Freewaves at freewaves.org to communicate with online audiences about the experience. Through the simple act of extracting dirt from one location and exchanging it for someone else’s dirt, Trading Dirt emphasizes the symbolic nature of transplanting part of one site with another.
