Join students from Occidental College today, Saturday March 29, in the invention of Allan Kaprow’s 1971 Happening Labor Day. Beginning and ending at Occidental College, students will dump and re-shovel one cubic yard of sand at various locations in a circular trajectory across the city.

Occidental College, Mullin Sculpture Building
1600 Campus Rd., Los Angeles (starting point)

Beginning and ending at Occidental College, students will dump and re-shovel one cubic yard of sand at various locations in a circular trajectory across the city. In a second activity, students will drive a car on a circular route around the Occidental Campus, stopping once per “lap” to remove and reinstall the car’s wheels. Occurring simultaneously, the activities will complement each other in their investigation of mental/physical boredom, failure, and fatigue through repetition. Transecting various industrial, touristic, ethnic, and class domains across the city, the progress of this Happening, Labor Day (1971), is measured by attrition and loss.

Labor Day (1971)
Originally occurring in Milan, Italy, Labor Day involves videotaping the actions of changing tires and shoveling dirt, performed on a race track and a circular route around a city respectively, reflecting the daily cycles of labor.
