Household

Organized by Robby Herbst and presented by Outpost for Contemporary Art, Household Revisited: Peaceniks, Treehuggers and other Believers reinterprets the Happening Household (1964). Originally an action dialogue between the “men,” the “women,” and the “people,” this daylong Happening will occur at a “lonesome dump out in the country” and there will be no spectators, only participants. For this version, participants will be asked to help rewrite elements of the Score by personifying their vision for world peace or environmental transformation with dress and movement, while performing the rest of the Score. The Happening will include hands-on workshops with choreographer Hana van der Kolk and sculptor Jessica Hutchins resulting in a collaborative Happening/musical. To participate, RSVP before Sunday, March 30.

Set in a “lonesome dump out in the country,” Household plays with gender stereotypes and domesticity—women build nests and men build towers—leading to a scenario where jam is spread on a car, smoke-flares are thrown, and a car is set ablaze.
