Watts Towers staff will reinvent Trading Dirt (1983) through conversations and socialization. Staff will trade dirt with the following artists and community members: Simon Rodia (through a symbolic exchange utilizing vintage footage); Mr. and Mrs. Pichardo; Augustine Aguirre; Kenzi Shiokava; Varnette Honeywood; and John Outterbridge. Each person will place the exchanged dirt in his or her garden or designated space. Simultaneously, a second bucket will acquire dirt from each community member and the entire mixture will be brought back to WTAC. This event is coordinated with the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles.

Trading Dirt (1983)
Through the simple act of extracting dirt from one location and exchanging it for someone else’s dirt, Trading Dirt emphasizes the symbolic nature of transplanting part of one site with another.
