I believe the the intention of the happening is the genuine engagement the participants have with each other. Rather than “spectators” or an “audience” as other performance art might call their viewers, each person coming to a happening is obtaining a slightly different experience from each other person. While the planned nature certainly shapes people’s expectations, each interpretation is still going to be fundamentally amorphous. A planned sensory experience is still a sensory experience.

Doesn’t the planned nature of the event, complete with spectators, defeat the primary intention of the happening?
