At various locations around the Solana Beach area, participants will pair off to perform Useful Fictions (1975). Each pair will use a recording device and a mirror to carry out a series of movements that intertwine and complicate the roles of leader and follower based on direct observation and secondhand, mirrored reflection. The entire process will be captured by the recording device. This Happening is organized by the University of California, San Diego, Visual Arts Department.

Useful Fictions (1975)
Carried out by two participants, Useful Fictions was first performed in Florence, Italy. This Happening takes participants through a series of exchanges—climbing up and down stairs or hills, telling each other accounts of the ascents and descents, recording these accounts, listening to these recordings, mimicking each other’s movements based on these recordings, and watching each other’s movements through mirrored reflection.
