Although Allan Kaprow’s tenure as a faculty member at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) was short, he created some very significant works with CalArts students in the early 1970s. CalArts students, alumni, and faculty are revisiting Kaprow’s history at CalArts and will reinvent Publicity (1970), which was originally produced with and for the CalArts student body. In this Happening, students built improvised wooden structures in the desert area of Vasquez Rocks near CalArts, while others videotaped them and immediately replayed it for the participants.

Dear friends and memory-keepers:

I was there for many of the HAPPENINGS at Cal Arts. From 1970 - 75 I was involved with many a happening as most of the campus, as I recall, showed up in curiosity, wonder and to document being documented. Unfortunately, I am unable to attend the 4th of May, 2008 revisitation. I have a publication from BOX (circa 1971-2) in which Kaprow’s : “happening” (I believe it was this one) was journaled. Please let me know if you want a copy as well as I have a poster from the staff of BOX which Kaprow was one of. I will see what else I have in the old dusty files. I was a mentee of John Baldessari and Mimi SHapiro and Pat O’Neill. T’was the times — tribal communication from teh one to the many and from teh many to the one…there was the distinction of all is one as the focus was on the moment and not on the ego creating the moment — it was art as life and how could life be even bigger art than life, raw, rich, filled with dirt and splinters and in some cases wet mud. We created, celebrated each other and the process of the processing.
Love to all those participants from the past and those relegated to teh present.
Perhaps the ripple of no time will penetrate our pressure soaked existance and breed some freedom from colonized thought.
