John Baldessari, Virtues and Vices (for Giotto), 1981

Using characters selected from popular films in the place of the original grisaille figures, John Baldessari reinterpreted Giotto’s fourteenth-century fresco cycle with this large-scale installation of photographs. The overall work alludes to the loss of faith in authority figures and the feeling of moral crisis that was prevalent in American culture during the late 1970s.
